Job Description:
The City of Prescott, located in the mountains of North Central Arizona is seeking a City Attorney with a unique combination of legal skill and ability to serve as a trusted advisor to the City Council while providing sound legal counsel on a variety of initiatives that support the best interests of the City of Prescott community. Prescott is recognized for its lively center plaza. The hometown/small town atmosphere is the essence of Prescott’s charm setting it apart from other Arizona cities of comparable size. It is known as “everybody’s hometown” because of its unmatched warmth, character and sense of community.
Job Responsibilities:
- The City Attorney will have to assist the Council with navigating the complexities of growth and in guiding development.
- There will be a number of development agreements that will need to be negotiated, implemented and monitored.
- Knowledge of contracts, development, real estate, annexations and zoning issues and how they can legally affect municipal operations of the City is most desirable.

- The successful candidate must be able to thoroughly research and analyze problems, evaluate risks and develop legal alternative options, sound conclusions and recommendations, as well as have the ability to intelligently explain legal concepts to different levels of audiences in a clear and direct manner.
- The ideal candidate must have the emotional intelligence and strength of professional convictions to provide legal insights and administrative counsel to the City Council and staff, being able to firmly and diplomatically present professional views and carry out administrative decisions in a timely, professional and impartial manner.
- It is essential that the candidate have effective communication and interpersonal skills to build productive working relations with City Council, City Leadership, Department Heads and other stakeholders, and have the ability to effectively provide legal advice in a respectful manner.
- The candidate must have the skills to present to audiences ranging from staff members to the community at large.
- The preferred candidate must be approachable, collaborative and facilitate meaningful conversations with those who may have differing viewpoints.
- In addition, they must be an empathetic leader able to understand the stresses and demands placed on a City Council.
- The ideal candidate will be respected in the state’s municipal law community and understand Arizona’s local government political, financial and legal landscape.
