Job Description:

You will be reporting to the Director Group Tax and Status, you will be expert in and lead on all Direct (e.g., Corporation Tax, Income Tax, Capital Gains Tax, etc) tax initiatives across the UK and International Regions and Countries covering strategic development in tax policies, processes, procedures, and systems. This will include contributing to mitigation of global tax risk and ensuring complex operations globally are managed tax efficiently, delivering opportunities for future growth in the scope of operations and the repatriation of funds with other members of Group Tax and Treasury operations teams.

You will have strong knowledge of large international organisation with multiple product/ service channels and the relationship between local country profit optimisation through transfer pricing policy and knowledge of what other management cross-charges are acceptable to a wide range of tax authorities.

Job Responsibilities:

  • Devise direct tax policies, processes and procedures and their implementation across the globe to support the British Council’s obligations and oversee as necessary their implementation.
  • Work with the Director Group Tax and Status in dealing with local tax authorities as country statuses change and where necessary, negotiate to achieve the most beneficial direct tax liability arrangements
  • Work with regional finance colleagues and subsidiaries accountants, to implement appropriate transfer pricing charging arrangements for intra-group services involving overseas entities to support the British Council’s overall direct tax strategy ensuring compliance with the UK and Global tax law / obligations. Strategic responsibility to minimise direct tax liability and optimise cash-flow.
  • Ensure proper controls are in place that satisfy the statutory requirements of all relevant local tax authorities for both direct and indirect tax, in all countries and especially where changes of status take place or have already taken place.
  • Provision of expert direct tax advice for the benefit of regional finance colleagues and Strategic Business Units leads in relation to tax structuring of intra-group transactions and new business opportunities.
  • For specific country tax and status regularisation projects, take the lead technical consulting role on taxation aspects (in particular, local direct tax withholding tax and sales taxes), including reviewing instructions to local tax advisers tailored to our specific business needs, challenging and interpreting advice and liaison with country finance, legal, governance and global network colleagues to ensure compliant and tax efficient solutions.
  • Maintain a register of contingent tax risks globally and contribute to resolution of back tax audits and negotiation with tax authorities.
  • Provide direct tax planning support to business areas globally on correct design and implementation, ensuring access to cash and investments required to meet the British Council objectives.
  • Support the Director Group Tax and Status in devising direct tax strategy to deal with new legislation, manage liabilities and build relationships with overseas tax authorities as the framework of legal status of each country office is reviewed / changed under the Council’s developing business model. Keep the Finance Leadership Team appraised of major direct tax risks, problems, and successes.
  • Work with Treasury to maximise efficient use of existing banking infrastructure providing leadership in respect of future opportunities that support business growth.
  • Provide technical support across all tax disciplines, to all areas of the organisation working in conjunction with the International Tax manager and Indirect Tax Manager.

Job Requirements:

  • You will be a member or fellow of one of the following: ATT/ ATII
  • Operating in International and multi-cultural organisations
  • Direct Tax Law
  • Familiarity with principles of transfer pricing and international tax concepts (e.g. permanent establishment, double tax agreements and application of withholding taxes) and practical experience of implementing or advising on strategies involving these concepts
  • Handling complex negotiations or contentious issues with tax authorities
